ATV Maintenance Tips
The better you maintain your ATV, the longer it will last and the better it will perform. The good news is that many of the simpler ATV maintenance tasks can be performed at home if you have the correct tools. This list of maintenance tips from Seminole Powersports South can help make ATV maintenance that much easier.
Review Your Owner’s Manual
Improper maintenance carries the risk of damaging your ATV. Since this is something that you;ll obviously want to avoid, it’s important that you consult your owner’s manual before you attempt maintenance of any kind. It will contain a wealth of information specific to your model, including a list of products that can be used with your quad without damaging it.
Oil
Engine oil is what allows your ATV’s internal components to glide against each other instead of grinding together and causing damage. Routinely inspect your vehicle’s oil supply to make sure that it’s still doing its job. Oil that has become sludgy should be replaced immediately. If the oil is full of metal shavings, parts of your ATV are grinding together when you ride. Replace your oil as often as your owner’s manual recommends.
Changing the Filters
Filters help keep harmful particles out of your ATV. Oil filters should be swapped out every time you perform an oil change, while air filters should be swapped out every three to four oil changes. Fuel filters tend to last a long time, but even they get dirty eventually. Check your fuel filters every once in a while to make sure that they don’t need to be replaced.
Spark Plugs
Spark plugs provide the initial spark that gets your engine running. If your ATV isn’t turning over as fast as it should, the cause is usually the spark plug. Luckily, these plugs are easy to replace. Simply disconnect the battery, remove the engine cover, and use a spark plug wrench to remove the plug. Check to make sure that the plug casing is clean, dry, and 100% intact.
